Frequently Asked Questions about learning Persian

Is Farsi the same as Persian?
Yes — Farsi is the Persian name for the Persian language. In English, both terms refer to the same language spoken in Iran, Afghanistan (as Dari), and Tajikistan (as Tajik).
How similar is Persian to Arabic?
Persian uses a modified Arabic script and borrows many Arabic loanwords, but the languages are unrelated. Persian is Indo-European (distantly related to English), while Arabic is Semitic.
How hard is Persian grammar?
Persian has no gendered nouns, no cases, and very regular verb conjugation — much simpler than most European languages. The main challenge is learning the script and expanding vocabulary.
Will I understand Dari or Tajik?
Persian, Dari (Afghanistan), and Tajik (Tajikistan) are mutually intelligible with some accent and vocabulary differences. Our courses teach modern Tehran Persian as the base.
