Learn Mandarin Online — Tones & Characters, Demystified

1.1 billion people speak Mandarin. Tones and characters scare most beginners — Talktiko solves both with tone-colored exercises, pinyin support, and spaced-repetition for hanzi.

Everything you need to learn Mandarin

Six core skills, 25 exercise types, and AI that meets you at your level — all built around Mandarin specifically.

Tones Through Exercises

Listen-and-tap and dictation exercises train your ear for the four tones. Every word is tagged with its tone, and mistakes trigger grammar cards explaining common confusions (mā 妈 vs mǎ 马).

Pinyin First, Characters Second

Start with pinyin to build pronunciation, then gradually introduce simplified characters through context. Traditional characters are available as an optional toggle.

HSK 1–6 Progression

Courses align with HSK levels. Every character, word, and grammar pattern is tagged with its HSK level so you can target specific exam tiers.

Measure Words Made Easy

Mandarin measure words (个, 只, 本, 张) are drilled through gap-fill and matching exercises. You'll learn which measure word goes with which noun through usage, not memorization.

Stroke Order Practice

Character introduction exercises show stroke order, radicals, and etymology. Spaced repetition keeps your hanzi recognition sharp.

Real Mandarin Conversations

Dialog exercises cover everyday scenarios — ordering hotpot, bargaining at a market, asking for directions on the Beijing subway — voiced by native TTS.

Every Mandarin course uses a mix of these exercise types to drill vocabulary, grammar, listening, and writing.

Frequently Asked Questions about learning Mandarin

How long to learn enough Mandarin to travel?
With 15–20 minutes daily practice, most learners can handle taxis, restaurants, and basic questions within 8–12 weeks. That's roughly HSK 1 level.
Do I need to learn Chinese characters?
Not at first. Our courses use pinyin to build pronunciation and listening. Characters are introduced gradually from HSK 1 onward, starting with the most common.
Simplified or Traditional characters?
Both are supported. Switch between simplified (mainland China) and traditional (Taiwan, Hong Kong) in your settings. Course content is available in both.
How do you teach Mandarin tones?
Every syllable is color-coded by tone (1-4 plus neutral). Listen-and-tap exercises force you to distinguish tones, and dictation practice catches tone errors before they become habits.
