Frequently Asked Questions about learning Hindi

How long to learn Devanagari?
Devanagari has 46 letters but is phonetic and regular. Most learners read basic Hindi within 1–2 weeks of daily practice with our interactive script exercises.
Is there much difference between Hindi and Urdu?
Spoken Hindi and Urdu share a common grammar and core vocabulary but use different scripts (Devanagari vs Nastaliq). Our courses focus on Hindi in Devanagari; Urdu will be covered separately.
Will I be understood across India?
Hindi is the official language of India alongside English, understood across most of northern and central India and increasingly in the south. Bollywood exposure means most Indians understand standard Hindi.
How is Hindi pronunciation different from English?
Hindi distinguishes aspirated and unaspirated consonants (p vs ph, t vs th, k vs kh), and has retroflex sounds (ट, ड, ण). Our listening exercises train your ear for these contrasts from day one.
